I'm a director and cinematographer currently based in Vancouver, BC. I come from a multicultural background where I grew up in Mexico and United States with Chinese heritage. My passion for world cinema and storytelling started at an early age with visual arts, particularly in painting. I studied film, interactive arts and graphic design at the University of Victoria, Vancouver Film School and Simon Fraser University. I'm also a film scholar where I was part of an academic research group to analyze different narrative forms and structures in various mediums such as TV and cinema.
I draw influences from my interest in painting especially in impressionism and naturalism characteristic of open composition, chiaroscuro, emphasis on accurate depiction of light, colour and the passage of time. My cinematic influence comes from the works by Andrei Tarkovsky, Krzysztof Kieslowki, Akira Kurosawa, and many other masters of cinema.
I have filmed with different formats from 35mm, 16mm to the latest digital emulsions. From commercials to engaging narrative and documentaries, the story and characters always come first, and are always the primary motivation to my approach to directing, lighting and narrative structure.
