Andrew Biraj

Andrew Biraj is a photojournalist based in Washington, DC. He holds an advanced diploma in photography from Pathshala, the South Asian Institute Media Academy and a BA in photography from the University of Bolton, UK. His works has been featured, exhibited and published worldwide, including in Visa Pour l’Image in Perpignan, the Angkor Photo Festival in Cambodia, Yangon Photo Festival in Myanmar, the International Photography Biennial of the Islamic World in Iran, Noorderlicht Photo Festival in the Netherlands, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Venice, the National Art Gallery in Malaysia and Drik Gallery in Bangladesh. Biraj was a participant in the 2008 World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. He has won several awards including: Best Portfolio in The 2013 Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar Contest; Honorable Mention in The 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest; third prize inThe 2011 World Press Photo Award; second prize in The 2013 Pictures of the Year (POYi); 1st prize in 2008 and 3rd third prize in 2010 in BOP by NPPA; a Gold award (in 2013) a Silver award (in 2011) and a Bronze (in 2007) in The China International Press Photo Contest; the 2010 Award of Excellence in Feature Photography, from the Society of Publishers in Asia; and, the 2010 South Asian Journalists Association Award for an outstanding photograph about South Asia. Biraj has been published internationally, including in: National Geographic Magazine, Time Magazine, The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Wall street Journal, BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Washington Post, The Observer Magazine, Geo, The Times, Los Angeles Times, Paris Match, Le Monde, Sydney Morning Herald, Newsweek, Stern, Vogue Italy, Asian Geo, Hindustan Times, amongst other international publications.
Biraj is the co founder and a lifetime member of Counter Foto Photography Department in Bangladesh, which was established in 2012.
