André Paxiuta Fonseca
Lisbon, Portugal
Hello everyone,
My name is André and I'm a Portuguese documentary photographer. I was born in Lisbon on January 11th 1983. I was drawn to photography at an early age by its power to motivate awareness and produce change.
I studied in the AR.CO School of Photography from 2004 to 2006 and graduated from University of Lisbon with a degree in Physical Geography in 2007. Since then I have been working as a researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies in Lisbon, working on social and environmental issues in the Mediterranean region. Last December I finished my PhD in Physical Geography during which I worked in the remote region of the Norther Rif Mountains, Morocco.
I began working as a freelance photographer in 2006. My first years in the industry were dedicated to shooting weddings, corporate events, music concerts and theatre plays for editorial and publicity purposes. Over the last five years I have had the opportunity to work as a documentary photographer for NGO's both in Brazil and Portugal.
My work concentrates on landscape and portrait photography aiming at the story telling potential images provide. It has been featured in several editorial platforms such as the Black&White magazine, the International Street Photographer (ISP) and the Social Documentary Network.
