Barbara DOUX
Toulouse, France
I’m the Wander Woman – Barbara – an explorer of the other in everyday life.
After more than a decade working in London as an art director and photographer, I dropped everything, bought a customised van and hit the road, seeking out people and places with stories to tell. Alone in my van since October 2014, without any specific plan or timeframe, I’m letting life surprise me, willing to make encounters and daring to love, like a child, whoever crosses my path.
Taking pictures of strangers is at the core of my mission: I see in the eyes of my subjects an openness to the connection being made, a familial bond that is stronger than difference or division. I often look at people from whom society turns away, the damaged, the marginalized, and the strange. I bring my own story, strength and vulnerability, to my work by sharing extract of my diary.
I won the “Howard Chapnick Award" from the Missouri Photo Workshop.
My next mission: draw a heart on the map of France through the roads that I will take, in 80 days.
