Claude Renault
Porto, Portugal
I was 11 years old when I took my first photo with an Instamatic and I really fell in love with photography when I was 17 years old.
I went to the « École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Rennes » and studied painting and sculpture. Two of my favorite painters were Paul Gauguin, Nicolas de Staël, and I was greatly influenced by several Italian painters of the Renaissance. They inspired me and my dream would have been to photograph the way they painted. Today, I consider myself a colorist. My photography is about capturing light, geometry and color.
Travel has always been a passion. When I was ten years old, I dreamt about going around the world, hitchhiking.
After a career as a corporate photographer in the USA, I decided to become a free lance as a travel photographer in 1994. If I do like to travel, it's not for a nice landscape or a historical monument, but for what makes the soul of a a country : its people. I have travelled to many great places in the world such as America, Africa, China, Tibet, Pakistan, Burma, etc…but India is still my favorite one to travel to. It just has a buzz that other places don't have.
For the past 15 years, part of my work has has been dedicated to document life in India and Morocco.
My work has been shown in a number of professional and travel magazines, books, exhibitions, interviews.
I am also represented by the Getty agency.
Nowadays I organise workshops in India, Morocco and Europe.
