Denise Hruby
Ruom
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
I am an award-winning freelance journalist based in Shanghai.
As a member of the Ruom collective, I work for several publications around the world. Feature-length stories have appeared in publications including Al Jazeera English, GlobalPost, the Australian, VOA, NBC News, the Diplomat as well as other international, regional and local outlets.
My investigative reporting has shone light on deforestation and environmental issues, human trafficking, climate change and high-level corruption. I have walked through mine fields, wrestled sun bear cubs, played soccer with Syrian refugees in Europe and drank home-made rice wine with Vietnamese fishermen.
I focus on feature writing, but have also produced videos for Quartz and VOA.
Currently based in Shanghai, I am available for assignments in China, Southeast Asia and Europe.
