I am a visual storyteller based in the Netherlands and Jerusalem. I am dedicated to create photographic stories and design visual concepts in order to convey a strong, but nuanced message. My primary objective is that this visual story serves the people or the subject in need and reaches an audience as broad as possible. I usually work in teams, where my role is the photographer and /or cameraman. Recent collaborative projects resulted in book publications, exhibitions and multimedia productions such as:OFFSIDE, Refugee Republic, Collateral and De Asielzoekmachine.
OFFSIDE, football in exile (2012), is a book and travelling exhibition (The Netherlands Canada and China) on the conflict in Nagorno Karabac. Refugee Republic, an interactive multimedia on daily life in a refugee camp in Northern Iraq which was presented during the IDFA 2014 (http://refugeerepublic.submarinechannel.com/) and was nominated for a Webby. My work on Zimbabwe won several photography prices including ‘Dutch Photojournalist of the Year 2008’ and ‘Special Recognition in World Understanding Award’ of PoYI. I was a participant in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in 2009.

Refugee Republic is an online documentary about everyday life in Camp Domiz, a Syrian refugee camp in northern Iraq. Around 58 thousand predominantly Kurdish-Syrian refugees have sought shelter here, gradually transforming the camp from a temporary refuge to a makeshift town where people live and work, go to school, start a business, get married, argue and have fun.
Visual artist Jan Rothuizen, journalist Martijn van Tol and photographer Dirk Jan Visser explored Camp Domiz from A to Z, together with web developer Aart Jan van der Linden they brought to life its inhabitants and places in a multidimensional mix of sound, drawings, photo and film. Welcome to Refugee Republic.
