Duco De Vries
Wieringerwerf, Netherlands
Back in the Netherlands he finished off his studies at the Amsterdam School of Art. Subsequently he started the study of photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Gerrit Rietveld Academie) in Amsterdam.
For his final project in 1995 he concentrated on portrait photography. Portrait photography has remained his great passion. As a freelance photographer he made intense portrait photographs for various magazines and advertising agencies. Whether it concerns a free commission or one where he is bound by several rules of the company or the advertising agency he works for, he always tries to capture the energy of the moment between him and the subject of the portrait.
Apart from working on his regular commissions, Duco de Vries spent thirteen years working on a project of his own: photographing the Rogues. All members of this motor club from Opmeer and Almere appeared in front of his lense. He was given an entirely free hand to photograph and was able to enter a world which remains closed for many. In that way a unique photo report of this extremely photogenic subject came into being. Of these lifestylebikers he photographed funerals, weddings, family members, choppers, parties, travels abroad and fellow motor clubs in the Netherlands and the United States. These photographs of the Rogues formed the basis for the photobook ‘Bikers in Holland’ (published by Inmere) which appeared in 2007. As a result of this book he was offered a new long-term project: photographing the well-known painter Casper Faassen at home, ????? …..and while painting. At the end of 2008 these photos resulted in the book ‘Caspar Faassen paintings, portrayed by Duco de Vries’ (published by Van Spijk). In 2009 his third book appeared: ‘Empowered Women’ (published bij Eve & Lilith). In this book he portrays various women in the prime of life, in good times and bad times.
