Raised and educated in West Germany Martin took advantage of the iron curtain being lifted and specialized in reporting from Eastern Europe. In 1997 he put up his photo correspondent's office in Budapest, Hungary, being the most convenient hub in the region. Today he leads the German-French picture agency EST&OST photography, which he co-founded in 2008, bringing together top photographers from Latvia to Croatia, from Czechia to Ukraine, he himself covering Hungary and parts of the neighbouring countries.
