One Mile and a Cloud of Dust; a glimpse into the world of Land Speed Racing, El Mirage Dry Lake, California. The high-octane roar, the desolate landscape, the glint of silver steel across a moon-like surface. It’s an iconic, timeless visual echoing the gritty determination of man and machine exploring new boundaries. El Mirage Dry Lake has been home to Land Speed Racing for more than half a century. The Southern California Timing Association holds official race events once a month from May to November in this unique stretch of the Mojave Desert, a couple of hours north of Los Angeles. The characters here are so vividly committed to their passion. On the day I arrived one motorcycle rider set a new land speed record at the age of eighty.
