Gadi Habumugisha
Kigali, Rwanda
Gadi Habumugisha is a documentary photographer based in Kigali, Rwanda. Creating images of people going about their daily activities in the developing world around him, his work allows him to constantly explore new corners of his continent and new image-making techniques. Gadi’s works invites viewers to look into moments in other people’s lives in order to understand diverse cultures and reexamine their own. Gadi was introduced to photography as a child while growing up at Imbabazi Orphanage. He was selected to participate in a photography project called "Through the Eyes of Children" that provided the orphanage’s children with disposable (and later, digital) cameras. His work was exhibited at the United Nations headquarters in New York City to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. Today, Gadi actively participates in Rwanda’s photographer community. He pays the knowledge he learned forward by teaching photography to Rwandan children in primary and secondary schools around the country. He is a photographer for The Photo Project, an organization that travels to remote areas of the world to take pictures of people who have never had their photo taken and gives them a print of their portrait. He also teaches photography to children in schools around the country. In addition to his own personal photography projects, Gadi works with NGOs based in Rwanda to document their activities. His photographs of the Millennium Village Project’s Heath Center were recently published in the New York Times.
