Isabella De Maddalena was born in 1978 in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy. After graduating from the Brera academy of Fine art with a focus in painting, Ms. De Maddalena worked in various photography studios in Milan and London from 2001 to 2006. After a stage at Contrasto’s agency in Milan in 2006, Ms. De Maddalena worked for one year as an assistant to photographer Stefano de Luigi. At the same time she started personal projects, the first one being a reportage following the motherhood path of immigrant women in three hospitals in Milano, published by Italy’s magazine Io Donna in November of 2008. In 2010 Ms. De Maddalena completed a master’s degree in visual storytelling at the Danish school of Photojournalism in Aarhus. She continued to work on themes related to motherhood and women in different countries, focusing on maternity conditions as a mirror of the respect of women’s rights in a country or a culture. Her stories/pictures have been published in various well-known magazines including: Marie Claire France, Marie Claire Spain, Marie Claire Romania, Le Monde, Women's Wear Daily, Io Donna, L'Espresso, The New York Times, Rolling Stone Italy, The Financial Times, The Observer, Internazionale, AD, and Cosmopolitan Germany. Ms. De Maddalena’s project “Poland: Ladies in Business” about the rise of Polish women enterpreneurs, was among the winners of "The Other Hundred" contest in 2014 (http://www.theotherhundred.com/2014/Isabella_De_Maddalena). The related book and exhibition were launched in Hong Kong in March of 2015.
