I am Jabulile Pearl Hlanze, a Johannesburg based photojournalist and documentary photographer who graduated at the Market Photo Workshop. I love photography because it connects me with people and spaces in a deeper manner. When I photograph a person or a space not only do I aim to capture the person but I also intend on capturing the mood and atmosphere in the moment, I believe adding layers such as innate items to images achieves this. I love documenting daily life because I believe seeing your own characteristics in other people through pictures gives people an opportunity to introspect and meditate on their own lives.
My work has been exhibited in various group shows which include the 40/40 politics of photography exhibition which was hosted by the Market photo workshop. The exhibition was a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprising and it included images by veteran photojournalists who captured the 1976 Soweto uprising and other anti-apartheid protests in the 1980s as well as images from the fees must fall 2015 movement that were captured by alumni members from the Market photo workshop. Three images were chosen from my archive for this exhibition.
My work was also part of the she clix exhibition which was held in Durban on the 30th July 2016 as well as the photo and film expo 2016. As an intern at the Beeld newspaper I published various images and covered stories such as the inner city evictions in Jeppestown as well as the xenophobic violent springs in the townships.
I believe that education is the product of art and every image I produce must carry a lesson for each of us to learn. I believe my role is to fill the vacant spaces in the conversation(s) and to offer a different perspective to the other side of the story - the side that no one likes to look at.
