James Oatway is an independent South African photographer. The former Chief Photographer and Picture Editor of the Sunday Times newspaper, he recently quit to pursue his dreams as a freelancer. Oatway has worked in many African countries including the DRC, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania and Lesotho. In 2015 he photographed a fatal attack by South African men on Mozambican migrant Emmanuel Sithole. The images sparked outrage and made international headlines. Oatway's work has won numerous awards including the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award 2015 (South Africa). Most recently he was named as a finalist in the prestigious CNN Multichoice African Journalist Awards 2016.
