Cairo, Cairo Governorate, Egypt
I am a freelance journalist based in Cairo, Egypt. I have contributed to TIME, VICE, The New Republic, Foreign Policy, Columbia Journalism Review, Al Jazeera America, The Huffington Post, The National, Salon, and The New York Times blog The Local East Village, among other publications. My photojournalism has appeared in VICE and The New York Times: The Local East Village.
In recent years I have written about the ongoing repercussions of the 2011 uprisings in Egypt, Syria, and Bahrain, alleged police brutality and the Occupy movement in New York City, the destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy, the Palestinian bid for United Nations recognition, as well as life, death, and politics in the Gaza Strip.
Between 2007 and 2010 I worked in the West Bank and Gaza for the independent Palestinian news agency Ma’an. I served as Ma’an’s chief English editor.
I graduated from Yale in 2007 with a BA with distinction in political science. In 2013 I completed a joint master's degree in journalism and Near Eastern Studies at New York University after a two-year MacCracken fellowship.
