Joe Van Eeckhout is a documentary cinematographer and filmmaker. Originally from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, he is currently based between New York and Portland, Oregon.
His work experience spans from branded production to non-fiction television, to documentary news and film. Recent work has taken him to the India, Philippines, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia.
He is comfortable in a diverse range of work environments, from a studio in Brooklyn to a dusty bed of a pickup truck in East Africa. Preferring a more engaging and intimate handheld filming style, Joe finds himself often exploring the evolving relationship between humans, resources, and land.
He is a DP for the Emmy Award-winning series from Al Jazeera, Fault Lines, and has been behind the camera for documentaries from CBS Documentaries, The New York Times, The Travel Channel, The Guardian, NBC Left Field, Human Rights Watch, VICE News Tonight, VICE Sports, AJ+, and more.
He holds a Bachelors of Arts from Macalester College and a Masters in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran School of Arts + Design at the George Washington University.
He completed HEFAT certification by Hawthorne Proactive in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2017, is a member of the Frontline Freelance Register and is FAA Part 107 Drone Certified.
Joe is available for commissions and assignments globally.
