Joe Van Eeckhout is a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker, originally from the Pacific Northwest of the United States, currently based in Nairobi, Kenya, where he covers the East Africa region and beyond. Recent work has taken him to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
His work primarily explores social and environmental issues with interests relating to climate change, conflict, and exploring new forms of visual storytelling. He is often drawn to stories exploring the evolving relationship between humans, resources, and land. He holds a Masters in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran School of Arts + Design at the George Washington University.
He has a variety of experience from corporate production work to documentary news. Corporate content for clients include USAID, Ogilvy, Ashoka, and ESPN. While working as a documentary filmmaker and photographer, recent clients include The New York Times, The Guardian, Human Rights Watch, VICE News Tonight, VICE Sports, The Economist, Huffington Post, and more.
He is a member of the documentary collective, DISCOURSE and Frontline Freelance Register.
