Alireza (Kambiz) Shabankare was born in Tehran in 1973 and studied Theater directing at Sooreh Art University of Tehran, later Journalism and Film Production at Austin Community College and Mass Communication at Texas State University. Since 1998, he has directed numerous experimental stage dramas, short and documentary films (including Head Over Heels), and TV programs; He also has worked as an international visual journalist for several major news organizations around the world including IRNA (Iran), The Guardian (UK), IRIB (Iran) , ZAMAN ( Turkey), Chnnel One (Tajikistan) etc. His first feature film was 2005’s, Tehran 25th Hour that, because of its sensitive subject on social justice issues, it was banned by Iranian government and resulted Kambiz's imprisonment in Iran.
