Lathan Goumas is a staff photographer at The Herald-News in Joliet, IL. His work has been recognized by the Illinois Press Photographers Association, the Associated Press and Boston University.
He grew up in coastal Virginia where he began using his camera at a young age. Photographing summer trips and time with his friends, he fell in love with viewing the moments of life through his camera.
Lathan also fell in love with the ocean, and in 2002 he moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Not long after graduating, Lathan moved to Alaska to work as a naturalist and marine educator. It was here that his photography began to grow from a hobby to a passion.
Documenting the wild of America's "Last Frontier," Lathan decided to spend the rest of his life looking through the lens.
After two years working in Alaska, Lathan returned to the southeast where he began to hone his photography skills and eventually was accepted into Boston University.
Lathan has not left his passion for science, nature and the environment behind. He continues to pursue personal work that will connect the importance of a healthy environment to the continued success of human society.
