Nicolas Gouin

Nicolas Gouin was born in Montreal, Canada in 1988. His conceptual documentary work primarily uses large-format digital and analog photography as well as narrative video. His approach to social documentary stemmed during his studies in fine arts at Concordia University. Since then, he has participated in various group exhibits throughout Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. His work has received multiple emerging photography awards such as Magenta’s Flash Forward in 2013, 2015 and 2016. His most recent work focuses on coming of age and within specific age groups and isolated communities. He is currently working on a series of portraits illustrating the self-exploration of teenagers who participate in restrictive military cadet activities and a newer series sixth graders. His approach to social documentary is often inspired by internal conflict, the quest for identity and periods of transition.
