Marianna Karakoulaki is a freelance journalist and editor based in Thessaloniki, Greece.
She currently reports on the European refugee crisis from the Greek Macedonian borders (Idomeni, Gevgelija), Thessaloniki, and Athens. She writes for several outlets including but not limited to DW News, IRIN News, the Middle East Eye, she worked as a stringer for News that Moves (Internews), and she contributes to radio programmes including BBC World Service, BBC Scotland, CBC Radio, and Voice of America. She has worked as a field producer for Channel 4 News at the award winning film “Macedonia: Tracking Down the Refugee Kidnap Gangs” (London Foreign Press Association Award for News Story of the Year).
She has also worked as a producer for several other media including Radio Television Suisse (Switzerland), Human Rights Watch, BBC Radio 4 (UK), Sanomat (Finland), Voice of America (USA) and others. Her comments and tweets have appeared on BBC Radio World Service, Voice of America, The Guardian, The Times, Mashable, Al Jazeera, Buzzfeed, Bernardinai (Lithuania), Telerama (France) and others.
She is the articles editor, director of the editorial board, and book series editor of the online academic publication E-IR.
