Mariano Doronzo
Nottingham, UK
Mariano Doronzo is an Italian photographer based in Nottingham (UK). In 2013, after his studies and graduation degree in Industrial Engineering, he moved to England to focus on his artistic career. Here, he started working with photography, documenting his personal journey and exploration of the English culture and landscape through the lens of an old film camera. This body of work, spanning across three years and named Through The Looking Glass, was exhibited in 2017 at The Photo Parlour (now Take It Easy Lab) - a film lab, darkroom, gallery and photography hub in the city of Nottingham.
In 2019, in partnership with the FORMAT International Photography Festival of Derby, Doronzo held a residency for The Institute of Reminiscence to investigate relationships relating to memory association, repetition and reappearance, as well as forms of “active” remembering. The two months residency was completed by presenting Slides on a Light Box, an installation with a revisited visual map of the town of Derby. Based on memories and stories of the local community, the body of work looked at documenting how many of the recalled places had been either deserted or replaced with new life.
I Don’t Know What I Want is the latest work produced by Doronzo during a Long-Term (2021-2022) Mentorship at Magnum Photos with Matt Black and Susan Meiselas.
A series of photos intertwined with poems, journal notes, and video frames to question the concept of masculinity. A contradictory mix to explore the male critical process as much as his personal struggle in finding individual identity during the present crisis of the traditional male role in line with new research on gender equalities and fluidity.
Also a keen writer, Doronzo was published in Italy in 2016 where his poetry book "Echi del mio tempo" won the Premio Polverini National Award for poetry. In the same year, he completed a creative Storytelling and Performing Arts Class at Scuola Holden in Italy.
