MENTAWAI, PROGRESS OR REGRESS?
Marina Calahorra
The Mentawai are an indigenous tribe based in an island west from Indonesia. For years they served themselves of their own habits and under their own ideology until approximately 20 years ago when Christian missionaries arrived to their land suggesting to them to convert into Christianism. They did not try to change Mentwai´s habits unlike a muslem integrist group which has been present in the area for the past year.
A mosque´s construction in the middle of the jungle is only the first step inside their construction plan which aims to develop the island.
Covering their women, dresings up their children, the construction of a school following muslim believes, introducing electricity, offering them motorbikes or mobile phones are only some of their propositions.
