Matteo Castelli
Florence, Italy
Award-winning Director of Photography based in Florence, Italy, working across Tuscany, Rome and the rest of the country, with thirty years on set.
My cinematography won the Premio Submarino Peral for Best Cinematography at the 54th Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena in 2025, for the short film "The Screenwriter" directed by Mark Petrasso. I have also shot for Dior, Netflix, PBS, WDR, BBC, Vice, the Washington Post and Economist Impact.
MORE THAN THE CAMERA
On small and medium productions I can build the whole shoot myself: crew, equipment, schedule and locations. A small crew in Italy starts at three people. A structured production runs fifteen to twenty, with departments, and for those I bring in people I have worked alongside for years, so nobody improvises on things they do not know inside out.
I work in English on set with British and American crews. I am not a native speaker and I make mistakes, but on a set that matters less than making sure nothing is misunderstood in silence.
WHAT I SHOOT
Commercials and branded content, documentary, short film and narrative, feature film, corporate interviews and editorial. Sony Cinema Line cameras and my own lighting come with me, and anything beyond that comes from rental houses I work with in Rome and Florence, billed to the production.
