I’m an American food and travel writer currently based in Belgium. My work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Condé Nast Traveler, Lucky Peach, Saveur, AFAR, Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure, and many others.
I studied history at Tulane University, but I’m a quirky Rhode Islander at heart. After graduation, I hung around New Orleans and later worked in New York as a youth gardening instructor and cheesemonger. I finally started writing in Austin after getting acquainted with its (then) up-and-coming dining scene. I also reported on local dining news as associate editor of Eater D.C. while living in the Washington, D.C. area. As you can see, I’ve done lots of odd jobs along the way. Writing is the only thing that has ever stuck.
The Washington Post once documented my scallops suspicions, but I’ve actually tried more offensive things as a professional eater. As a travel writer, I’ve interviewed an octogenarian tofu maker in Japan, eaten breakfast on the savanna in Kenya, tried scorpion-infused mezcal in Mexico, unearthed obscure cookie recipes in Alabama, and sipped rare cognac in France.
