Brendan grew up an American in an Irish household: in awe of the stories told around him. Sadly, he was not blessed with the gift of gab but works everyday to tell eloquent visual stories. His personal connection with the people he's photographing helps those who view his images experience them in a more intimate way. Brendan has been honored with the privileged of attending such institutions as the Missouri Photo Workshop, the Eddie Adams Workshop and the Magnum Foundation's Photography Expanded Lab.
Kavlak Uliana Nicolaivna, lifetime resident of Taraclia, Moldova, lights candles after the power had gone out on the night I was to begin living with her. This project is a remembrance of my dear friend, housemate and the life she lived as a subsistence farmer and community leader.
Uliana Nicolaivna surveys the land on which she grew her food. After retiring, like many of people in Moldova, she began working the land she lived on every day in order to survive.
Watching Russian soap operas, Uliana Nicolaivna eats dried fish and pickled peppers. During winter, when she was unable to grow produce, she ate preserved foods, prepared during harvest time in autumn.
