Miguel Pinheiro is a Portuguese filmmaker, writer, and photographer. Graduated in Neuroscience in Portugal, and MA in Theatre (International Ensemble) at the University of London, UK. Awarded at the Prague’s Theatre Festival and, nominated at The Edinburgh’s Theatre Festival. In 2010 his documentary film and theatre work with the urban youth from the outskirts in Cape Verde was recognised by the local African government, and he was picked as a Creative Activist by Creative Visions Foundation (USA). He has since worked in film England, Brazil and, Portugal. His multimedia project “ALTER RIO”, about the offbeat streets of Rio de Janeiro was selected to be part of the City’s Cultural Agenda during the 2016 Olympics, while providing photography classes to the outskirts' communities. He has documented the lives of the Palm Oil farmers of the Brazilian Amazon for the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). More recently he has focused on a traditional afrobrazilian community in Brazil, who struggles for the right to the land, and got the attention of the UN. As a documentary photographer his work has been shown in solo and collective exhibitions, in Portugal and Brazil. In 2020 it will premiere his first feature documentary film as a director and a writer, supported by Brazil’s National Cinema Agency (ANCINE).
