A thunderstorm passes through the San Luis valley just outside of San Luis, Colo., on June 18, 2017. San Luis is the oldest town in Colorado and home to the oldest continuously operating business in the state as well, the R&R Market, which has been run by the same family for generations. The current owners, Felix and Claudia Romero, are looking to retire, but haven't found a buyer for the store yet. Nick Cote for The New York Times

During a history class, a fellow classmate insisted that Muslims never denounce acts of terrorism committed in the name of Islam. Crowley McCuistion of Sugar City, Colo. holds a calf as it's branded on Gray's Ranch in Crowley County, Colo. on June 1, 2016. During the day 260 calves will be wrangled, branded, vaccinated and tagged. Ranchers in the area rely on each other to help with brandings, which are also a social event in the rural county.
