James Nakagawa

Osamu James Nakagawa received a MFA from the University of Houston and currently he is a professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Nakagawa is a recipient of many prestigious awards, including a 2015 Insight Award from the Society for Photographic Education, 2014 Sagamihara Photographer of the Year in Japan, 2009 John Simon Guggenheim fellowship and 2010 Higashikawa A New Photographer Award in Japan. Nakagawa's work has been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at the Sepia EYE, New York, Kyoto University of Art and Design, Sakima Art Museum, Okinawa, Japan; Photo Gallery International, Tokyo and others. His recent work, BANTA and GAMA series was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Les Rencontre D’ Arles, France; Fries Museum, Netherlands; Nikon Salon, Tokyo; and others. Nakagawa’s work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum, George Eastman House, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and others. Nakagawa’s recent monograph GAMA Caves was published from Akaaka Art Publisher in Tokyo, Japan.
