Philippe Brault, photographer and film-maker, is born in Brest in 1965.
He became a photographer in the 80s, when in Lebanon he discovered the civil war and decided to show the violence affecting the civil population.
In Cairo, Philippe Brault worked on the living conditions of the“Forgotten” population from the city's shanty towns. In Guatemala City, he directed a reportage on the daily violences where summary executions and poverty are the norm. It is as a committed investigator that Philippe Brault has also worked on the consequences of the Hurricane Katrina, and on the hope that Obama's campaign conveyed.
“If its is always political, Philippe Brault’s photography is never limited to sole journalistic approach, since the question of when the image was captured, is considered independently from the event as related by the media. His approach and his aesthetic are part of a new documentary form, which gives a greater place to poetry and distance” Joana Anisten writes.
Through this tradition of long-term projects, Philippe Brault considers new multimedia approaches where the story-telling and the editing takes the viewer into a new journalistic experience. Philippe Brault and journalist David Dufresne co-directed in 2010 the web-documentary Prison Valley, an implacable assessment of the prison industry in the United-States for which they won many prizes (http://prisonvalley.arte.tv).
In 2013, he produced "Le jeu des 1000 histoires", a web-documentary/ game on the oldest French radio show. A co-production by Radio France and Upian (http://1000-histoires.franceinter.fr). During the same year, he works on David Dufresne’s new web-documentary “Fort McMoney”, which deals with the tar sands oil extraction in Northern Canada.
In 2014, he made photos as well as short videos which depict the fight against polio in Nigeria.
In 2015, he directed an Arte documentary about islamic radicalism in prisons : Profession , aumônier des prisons.
