Prior to entering academia, I was a photojournalist, writer and editor. My work has appeared in the Washington Post, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Times Herald, Chronicle of Higher Education, Commission, OnMission, Christianity Today, Baptist Press, Charisma and numerous others. I worked for several years with UPI, covering events in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Memphis and NC.
I am a past president of the NPPA, believing that advocacy and education are an important need in developing photojournalists.
After almost 25 years as a visual journalist, I have spent the last 18 years as a professor and chair of the Department of Communication & New Media at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. I still actively shoot assignments on a regular basis.
I have been married to my wife, Sharon for over 30 years and have three children.
