Collective Role
What Took You So Long?
Nairobi, Kenya
Renee Mboya is a filmmaker, writer and curator from Nairobi, Kenya, working in fiction and narrative non-fiction. She is widely published and has exhibited her film work in various public forums including in Bamako, Amsterdam and México City.
Always in search of new stories and new ways to tell them, in 2014 Renee embarked on a 21 country road trip from Nigeria to Bosnia & Herzegovina, traveling overland over five months. Her work attempts to explore the tricky question of identity, specifically the presumed singular identity of contemporary people by looking at instances of language, location and the distinct physical realities that occur as a result. She is interested in particular in the ways in which bodies are modified by shifts in creed and culture.
With What Took You So Long, she has collaborated in shooting projects in Liberia, Somalia, Somaliland, Lebanon, Tanzania, the DRC and Uganda, with a particular focus on women's narratives, specifically Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Maternal Health.
