Rhiannon Adam
Women Photograph
London, UK
I was educated at Central Saint Martins, and later studied English at Cambridge University, and I'm currently based in London. I describe myself as an artist working with photography – though my work is issue based and is associated with social documentary, it often straddles the boundary into art photography.
In 2015, supported by the BBC/Royal Geographical Society, I travelled to the remote island of Pitcairn in the Pacific for three months to make a Radio 4 programme and body of photographic work. In April 2019 I was named a winner of The Photographers’ Gallery New Talent Award – the Pitcairn work is currently on show there until October 6th 2019. It will also be exhibited as part of this year’s Les Recontres D’Arles Night of the Year.
My work regularly features in the press – including the New York Times, Le Monde, Art Review, The Guardian, Telegraph magazine, Huffington Post, Refinery 29, BBC, Vice, Huck, Featureshoot, BJP, PHMusuem, Fisheye, It’s Nice That, and Harpers.
In 2018, I was a Portrait of Britain winner and included in the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, as well as 209 Women. In 2018, I collaborated with Laura Pannack on a project for Peckham 24, shortlisted for the PHMuseum grant in 2019.
I was also awarded a commission from the British Journal of Photography, to explore fracking in the UK. A portrait from the series was featured in Lensculture’s Portrait Awards at Aperture Gallery as Juror’s Pick and the project was recently featured on Dazed and Confused.
I often teach workshops and give talks – recent appearances include the Royal Academy, Photographer’s Gallery, Tate, V&A Museum, RPS Visual Arts, and Barbican.
My first book, Dreamlands, Wastelands (publisher: Jane and Jeremy) was released in 2014. In 2017, Thames and Hudson published my resource on instant photography - Polaroid: The Missing Manual, The Complete Creative Guide (translated titles vary). Big Fence / Pitcairn Island is set for release in autumn 2019.
