Rob Mattson
Noble Research Institute
Ardmore, OK 73401, USA
Rob Mattson is a staff photographer at the Noble Research Institute in Ardmore, Okla., where he produces unstaged, unposed, documentary photographs, portraits and illustrations for a non-profit that’s focused on helping farmers and ranchers through research, consultation, education and philanthropy. In 2018, the work produced for Noble helped Mattson earn recognition as the AAEA Photographer of the Year - in addition to multiple ADDY and ACE awards.
Prior to Noble, Mattson served as a staff photographer at Amherst College, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Courier News. Through it all, Mattson freelanced in his spare time, using everything from DSLR and 35mm film cameras to 120mm, 4x5, infrared, pinhole and tintypes.
Current and past clients include The New York Times, The Washington Post, Seattle Times, Denver Post, Miami Herald, The National, Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Affarsvarlden, MSNBC, Time, Las Vegas, Verdant Living, Liaison Agency, Reflex Agency, and many, many more.
Mattson started making photographs at the age of 15, was freelancing for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at 16, and was named a "Who's Who" in American photography at 17. Mattson paid for his own education at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and was selected for The Eddie Adams Workshop, Barnstorm XIV in 2001. In 2011, Mattson returned to the University of Colorado at Boulder to earn a Certificate of Advertising through the prestigious Advertising a2b program, during which his team produced the best overall campaign.
Mattson's a pretty good guy who has travelled the world on-assignment, been selected for Pulitzer Prize nominations twice (not a big deal, but a big deal to him), has mentored and taught the next generation, and is one who loves experiencing and communicating the cool idiosyncrasies that keep us from becoming a monoculture.
