John Watts-Robertson
Rothwell, Northamptonshire, UK
Hello, I'm John Robertson or 'JR' as my friends nicknamed me. I set up JR-Photos back in 1987 and still adhere to my core principles from then of creativity, reliability and striving to be amongst the best at what I do.
It's at this point most photographers will mention that they are award-winning and their hobbies of origami and skydiving. I won't bore you with the details of my hobbies, but amongst many awards, I have twice been voted UK Press Photographer of the Year. It's an achievement I'm proud of but I am never happy to rest on my laurels and continue to learn and improve.
I've been a working photographer all my life, since leaving Alcester Grammar School, training with the NCTJ in Wednesbury and at LCP, now UAL, London. I worked my way up from local papers 'The Stratford-upon-Avon Herald', 'The Wellingborough News Echo' and 'The Northants Evening Telegraph' to become a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Telegraph and many other national and international newspapers since 1987.
Alongside the national papers I still work for, I also cover commercial, PR and corporate jobs along with videography, both commercial and news. From David Cameron to Angelina Jolie and Joan Collins, my lenses have captured people from all walks of life. From my base in the East Midlands I have covered thousands of assignments throughout the UK and abroad.
I'm an easy going person with a sense of humour and able to mix in and get on with people from whatever background-I've had tea with terrorists, photographed a High Court judge and a tramp in very different locations on the same day and am used to photographing sometimes difficult people and sensitive subjects.
I am a member of the Federation of Small Businesses and proud to be an ambassador for Manfrotto. You can find articles about their products and how I use them in my job at Manfrotto School of Xcellence.
