The Capo
Simona Bonanno
The outdoor markets of the Sicilian city of Palermo open a genuine gate to the past where the oldest Sicilian traditions continue without any interruption.
Capo market dates back to the age when the Arabs ruled Palermo and at the time, served primarily as a haven for pirates, slave merchants and mercenaries. It is still a real circus: colours, smells, screams of the vendors combined with folklore draw the essential spirit of the city.
Palermo markets lie at the very heart of neglected neighbourhoods: the crumbling buildings beneath their faded façades hide the silent memories of wars, invasions, loves and deaths.
Capo market still today manages to maintain its intricate labyrinth appearance of real Arabian souk, exuding immediately an atmosphere of opulence and grandeur intermixed with decay, decline, and lawlessness.
