Stephen Huff
San Diego County, CA, United States
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, attending Victor J. Andrew High School where I enrolled in my first photography course. My parents bought me an SLR camera that year and I began taking my first photos in the forest preserves of Cook County.
In college I began to pursue a path toward photojournalism, but ultimately acquiesced to parental pressure and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Economics. It served me well, and I spent the next twenty-two years working in the Information Technology and Mergers & Acquisitions areas of the medical device industry.
From 1997 through 1999 my wife Tricia and I lived in the United Kingdom, where I worked for a major orthopedic company. In November of 1999, we moved to Breda, Netherlands where our daughter Sydney was born. In 2001, we relocated to Asia and called Tokyo, Japan our home for the next several years. During this time, I continued pursuing my photography hobby and joining like-minded groups; honing my skills and exhibiting at multiple venues throughout Japan.
Back in the United States and still in the orthopedic industry, in 2014 I began using vacation time to volunteer photographic storytelling to nonprofits in and around my home base of Southern California, as well as abroad in developing countries.
In 2016 I decided to combine my passions for humanitarian work and photography. Having lived and traveled across the globe, I've seen firsthand the devastating effects of poverty, inadequate healthcare, nonexistent government social programs, poor educational systems, and weak and crumbling infrastructure. But I've also witnessed the life-changing good works being done by those who focus their attention on humanitarian efforts.
This is where I have found my calling and focus my efforts.....social-minded documentary photography to help improve the quality of life for those who need it most. Both abroad and right here at home.
