Sungkyung Kwak

Sungkyung is a photographer, storyteller and artist born in Seoul, South Korea and currently based in New York City.
After studying Photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Sungkyung became a reporter for The Korea Times of New York from 2010 to 2011, where she honed her skills as a photojournalist. During that time, she also worked for Vogue Girl Korea as a freelancer. In 2011 she volunteered at Serving Friends an NGO for Groundwater Development in Tanzania, which gave her the opportunity to experience a new culture and purpose. Sungkyung has had a long interest in photographing homelessness. She has volunteered and stayed in numerous homeless shelters throughout Rochester and New York City, documenting the stories of homeless people for over four years.
Recently, she graduated from the Documentary and Photojournalism Program at the International Center of Photography. She was selected to participate in the Eddie Adams Workshop XXVI. She is currently working on a long-term project entitled, “Glass Island”, where she contemplates the reflected world of New York City in its glass frames, subway windows, displays and museum spaces, capturing real moments in a surreal world.
