Thoko Chikondi

Thoko Chikondi is a 30 year old award winning Malawian photojournalist who is passionate about telling the untold stories of women and children through imagery. Her work seeks to highlight their plight and suggest solutions to their problems. Thoko was the CTA/NEPAD 2011 Southern Africa Award winner for her photographs on the involvement of youth and women in ICTs and Climate Change. In 2012, she received a Copyright Society of Malawi award for best female photojournalist in Malawi.
In November 2015, Thoko Chikondi received a World Bank award for her photographs on how to end poverty in Malawi. In May 2016, Thoko spoke at TEDx Lilongwe about her work during the worst floods to have hit Malawi in 2015. In August 2016, her work on empowering women in and through the media won in the SADC region at the GEM Summit in Namibia.
In October 2016, Thoko was among the 12 visual storytellers selected for the World Press Photo Masterclass East Africa Masterclass – the first in Africa, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya. She works as a part time photojournalist at a local daily publisher; Nation Publications Limited where she has been publishing for over four years. She also corresponds for Associated Press and Barcroft Images.
