A Release: Stories of Self Injury
Tiffany L Clark
“A Release: Stories of Self-Injury” is a current photographic work in progress project about the addiction of self injury. The story so far follows four women, Jennifer, Anne, her sister Alison, and a young women named Nicole. The story begins to acknowledges their hidden lives dealing with self injury, showing visually what they are experiencing, what they are feeling and what they are going through emotionally, mentally, and physically. Unlike other “socially expected” addictions like alcoholism and anorexia (to name a few), Self-Injury injury is by far the loneliest one to deal with and seek treatment for because of the lack of support and help one can seek and also social fear of telling people that you are a self-injurer.

The Daya Shelter located in Cuajimalpa, a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City, has taken in Liliana and many other girls in the same situation to help the girls learn how to take care of their babies and children while also learning "normal" everyday tasks like cooking, laundry, cleaning, going to school, and working to prepare these young mothers how to get back into society.
