“Having been born to immigrant parents I was always aware that there was a world outside of my neighborhood. At an early age I developed a love of drawing and painting. At the age of seventeen my thirst for adventure, as well as a desire to give back to the country that offered my family hope, motivated me to join the Marine Corps. It was there that I first began shooting photos with a friend's camera. I was deeply moved by the power of photography to capture story and emotion in a fraction of a second. While studying photography and film at the University of Illinois in Chicago, I quickly learned that I was better suited to shoot a camera than a rifle.
My thirst for adventure has not subsided and I continue to travel whenever possible. Photography is an art that teaches me about the world as well as myself. It satisfies my hunger to learn, to explore the world and to connect with others. As a teenager serving in the Middle East I recall hoping I might make it home in one piece. I swore that if I returned home safely I would pursue my dreams without reservation. The amazing experiences I’ve had through photography have deepened my respect for people from all walks of life."
