Sandra Hernández
Querétaro, Santiago de Querétaro, Qro., Mexico
Sandra Hernández is a Mexican-Canadian architect and photographer. Her passion for the urban theme and its daily life has led her to explore the cities from these two disciplines whose practice is closely linked: one complements the other.
She is an official ambassador for Fujifilm (X-Photographer) and photographer for La Carrera Panamericana. She has also been an ambassador for the Huawei brand, which selected her along with a few other photographers from around the world to participate in The City, the Self campaign. She has participated in different solo and group exhibitions in cultural venues on four continents and some of her images have received awards and honorable mentions in internationally renowned photography competitions. In parallel, she collaborates for different art and photography publications and is a lecturer professor at the School of Architecture, Art and Design of Tec de Monterrey.
Although her work has ranged between street and documentary photography, she has recently approached self-portrait and author photography. In these experiments she has found parallels between the methods of portraying strangers in the streets and the methods of using ourselves as objects of observation. So she discovered that if through street photography she could be able to penetrate the layers of a city to reach core points, through the self-portrait she could pierce her own layers in a revealing process.
She is the founder and general director of Urban Observers: a platform dedicated to spread and promote Ibero-American street photography. When she is not on a trip working on a project, she divides her time between Queretaro, Mexico and Quebec, Canada.
