Yoon Byun
Portland, ME, USA
Yoon is a problem solver. He finds solutions for challenging assignments and delivers under tight deadlines. Even in the most stressful situations, he remains cool and affable, putting clients and editors at ease. That same easy demeanor and intuition make him a powerful storyteller. And he always delivers.
Yoon is an award-winning photographer who lives in Portland, Maine, and works worldwide. He was part of the Boston Globe staff awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. He was named Boston Press Photographer of the Year in 2010. During the two years that he was photo editor and director of visuals at the Portland Press Herald, his staff won numerous awards, including being recognized repeatedly by the Maine Press Association and winning three regional Emmy Awards. He has a bachelor of arts in journalism from New York University (2002) and a master's in photojournalism from Ohio University (2011).
His work also has been recognized by Pictures of the Year International, the National Headliner Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Awards, LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph as a SHOTS presenter, the Magenta Foundation and the Society for News Design.
Yoon enjoys meeting people and telling a good story. He has lived in five countries and more than a dozen cities, but he tells people he's from New York. His biggest assignment came in 2015 when he and his wife welcomed their son, Hartley, into the world. When he has free time, he enjoys playing, watching and talking about basketball.
